Video interview tips

Video interviews are now much more common, with many employers actively using them, particularly during the earlier stages of an interview process. They’re both cost effective and are more efficient time-wise for both interviewers and interviewees. And whilst we may all be used to FaceTime and Zoom socially, video interviews present unique challenges and proper preparation can help you excel.

Here’s our quick guide to nailing your video interview:

  1. Prepare thoroughly – Just as with traditional interviews, thorough preparation is crucial. Research the company, understand the role, review your CV, and anticipate potential questions. Your recruiter should provide additional guidance to ensure you’re well-prepared.
  2. Prioritise punctuality – Being on time is just as important in virtual settings. Log in several minutes early to avoid technical delays. Remember, unlike in-person interviews, missing your slot may not allow for rescheduling.
  3. Test your technology – Prior to the interview, ensure all necessary software is installed and updated. Conduct a test run with a friend to verify that your audio, video, and internet connection are functioning properly.
  4. Optimise your environment – Choose a quiet, tidy location for your interview. Ensure proper lighting, with the main light source in front of you. Inform household members about your interview to minimize interruptions.
  5. Communicate clearly – Speak slowly and distinctly to compensate for potential audio delays or glitches. Position yourself close enough to your device for optimal audio pickup.
  6. Dress appropriately – Despite being at home, dress as you would for an in-person interview. Professional attire not only impresses the interviewer but also helps put you in the right mindset.
  7. Listen attentively – Pay close attention to the interviewer to avoid talking over them. If you need clarification, don’t hesitate to ask politely.
  8. Mind your body language – Remember that you’re visible on screen. Maintain good posture, show engagement, and position your camera at eye level for optimal eye contact.
  9. Minimize distractions – Close unnecessary applications and turn off notifications to stay focused throughout the interview.

By following these guidelines, you’ll be well-equipped to make a strong impression in your video interview. Remember, most of these tips apply to traditional interviews as well. With proper preparation and the right approach, you’ll be on track to securing your desired role.
